Concrète Preconceptions

Concrète Preconceptions is an installation created in 2015 exhibited at Random! 2015 in the ANU School of Art Foyer Gallery. The piece asks the audience to draw 8 cards from the deck. On the cards is a description of a kind of sound. The audience is then asked to imagine those sounds in sequence.

The piece is a kind of imaginary Musique Concrète, no physical sounds are made in a performance of the piece, but the idea of sound is elicited. In this way the piece explores the space in between the physical phenomena of sound and the way humans experience and perceive sound. The piece also explores the idea of an ‘essence’ of a sound.
